A collaborative presentation unpacking the exciting and complex process of developing Putaiao.

In this collaborative presentation, Curator Dr Tony Stumbo and Spatial Designer Andy Irving will unpack the exciting and complex process of developing Putaiao, the upcoming Science Innovation Centre at Te Manawa. Informed by partnerships with iwi, educators and scientists, this centre will be designed to target school aged children and their whānau, with a future focus on cultural and social relevance that encourages creativity, accessibility, curiosity and problem-solving.

Andrew Irving & Dr Tony Stumbo, have been in their current since roles 2023, Lead Exhibition Designer Andy Irving and Science Curator Dr. Tony Stumbo are key members of the project team for Putaiao Science Centre at Te Manawa. With 20 years' Spatial Design experience, Andrew has worked on high-profile exhibitions including at Te Papa Tongarewa and for Weta Workshop, while Tony advocates for science communication, natural history collections and hands-on learning. Together, they are interested in making meaningful, locally relevant and welcoming for experiences for all.
