As part of the Aotearoa Festival Design, Here & Dulux are excited to bring their ongoing Open Home series to Whanganui & Palmerston North. Open Home is a very special event that opens architecturally designed houses to the public – it's a unique opportunity to see inside buildings you would otherwise only ever see in the pages of a magazine. For this event, the programme expands to three sites across two days, with Friday afternoon in Whanganui, before moving to Te Papaioea Palmerston North on Saturday morning. Don't miss this very special, one-off event.
Our three very special projects are:
- Hatrick House (Don Wilson) Whanganui
The "other" Don Wilson house shows the architect's revolutionary international style – at a time when New Zealand architects were building elegant sheds, Wilson's glamorous American-influenced modernism included generous windows, clear composition and built-in cabinetry.
- Te Ruamātatoru (Dalgleish Architects) Whanganui
Built at Whakaniwha, a garden at Pūtiki in Whanganui connected to Ngāti Ruaka hapū, Te Ruamātatoru was inspired by a now-derelict pataka kai – food store house – at Rānana. This delightful small building is part of a broader kaupapa to restore the whenua, planting local indigenous flora along riparian margins using seeds collected from Rānana.
- Strip Mall (Spacecraft Architects, pictured) Palmerston North
On a long-neglected commercial site on the main road into Te Papaioea Palmerston North, Strip Mall is a shining example of what density in a regional centre might look like. Housing its owners two businesses and a generous apartment, it's practical, colourful and fun, using commercial building techniques to striking effect.
